Unraveling Your Genome . . . Individualizing Radiation TherapyTM

CVERGENX is a biotechnology company committed to delivering personalized radiation therapy to cancer patients. Radiation Therapy (RT) is the single most common agent used in cancer therapeutics and up to 60% of individuals diagnosed with cancer receive RT. However, clinicians are unable to distinguish differences in radiosensitivity across tumors when prescribing RT. CVERGENX, in collaboration with investigators at the Moffitt Cancer Center, has developed a unique molecular diagnostic assay that identifies differences in tumor radiosensitivity, which allows the appropriate selection of patients most likely to benefit from RT. In addition, it is possible to customize radiotherapy doses to fit the particular radiosensitivity profile of the tumor.  The technology utilizes a proprietary algorithm to generate a radiosensitivity index (RSI) derived from the expression of ten specific genes. Importantly, it has been clinically-validated in four different disease sites (breast, head and neck, esophageal and rectal cancer) in a total of 621 patients. A National Cancer Institute-sponsored trial is currently underway to prospectively validate the assay in rectal and esophageal cancer patients.  Completion of the trial is expected in 2011.
